*Quiz on "Self-Reliance"  -- take a few moments to review (I asked you to review for homework), and I will then collect your copy of "Self-Reliance."   This quiz is worth 100 pts. (same as "A Psalm of Life"). The objective here is for you to be closely familiar with these texts by being attentive in class as they are being discussed, taking notes (annotating), thoughtfully responding to review questions, and then reviewing.

*Research on Mexican-American War -- complete handout by checking with a classmate if your are missing an answer.  Then, we will correct the "quiz," score it, and turn it in.

*"Self-Reliance" -- If you have not completed your paragraph on Emerson's essay, please do so today in addition to the assignment below. The purpose of writing about "Self-Reliance" is to make yourself more familiar with Emerson's ideas.  Through writing we are more thoroughly processing the ideas. You are explaining Emerson's ideas in your words.  Please study your notes on the esssay.  There will be a quiz tomorrow.  STUDY.

*On Friday we did an activity in anticipation to reading "Self-Reliance" by Ralph Waldo Emerson.  The activity was to get you thinking about the importance of trusting your own beliefs and standing up for what you believe in versus following the crowd. We will read the text together and you will take notes as we go along.  Be attentive to the reading and the discussion -- the final writing assignment for this unit of study will require you to explain the important ideas of Emerson.
