"Advice to Youth"

GOOD MORNING!  Welcome back to school -- I hope that you had a wonderful Thanksgiving vacation! 

Please get your netbooks when you arrive.

1.  Book Reviews -- I would like to share with you some of the more successful book reviews.  Please bring your new selection to class each day for some quiet reading. 

2.  I would also like to share with you some English Journal responses which caught my attention.

3.  Anticipation Questions: (Respond in your ENGLISH JOURNAL)
     1. What is the most consistent advice that you receive from your
          elders (parents, teachers, etc.)?
     2.  Is there advice that you hear that you believe to be futile?
     3.  What do you think is the best advice?
     4.  What is your best advice? 

3.  HOMEWORK:  Mark Twain -- "Advice to Youth"  (HANDOUT COPY)

     *What do you think Twain is mainly satirizing?

         *Give three examples from the text and explain what he is 

       mocking.

     *Point out three instances of sarcasm or verbal irony
