Satire Essay

Please get your netbooks when you arrive.  Read quietly until we are ready to begin.

*Yesterday I showed you the satire writing prompt for the essay that you will be completing by Wednesday, December 18th. (I will give you a hard copy today). For homework last night I asked you to write an introduction which would also include a thesis statement.  For this essay, you will CREATE A NEW DOCUMENT and will name it: Period ___ Satire Essay.  Do this today and also share it with me today (abaltrushes@gmail.com).

Friday you responded in your ENGLISH JOURNAL to two student satires, "Satirical Essay on Social Media" and "How to Succeed in School."   Let's look at some of your responses.  (Your response should be a well-developed paragraph).

Satire Process Prompt

Choose an issue in your life or our community that concerns and bothers you and write a satirical essay that critically examines this issue.  Use some of the techniques we have looked at such as, hyperbole, sarcasm and verbal irony, and figurative language. Support your points with evidence that will entertain and inform your audience.

HOMEWORK: Write introductory paragraph to your essay.  Include a thesis statement.  You will be creating a NEW Google document and naming it Period ___ Satire Essay.  Share it with me at abaltrushes@gmail.com.

*  In groups of 4 I would like you to generate a list of possible 

    topics for our next writing assignment which will be to write 

    your own satire.  List ten topics/issues.

Today we are reading another piece of satire which I have shared with you in your VIEW ONLY folder.  The essay is "No Chive Left Behind."  PLEASE make your own copy of the text.  Please read the essay quietly and respond to the questions at the end.  When you have completed the questions, please copy the completed questions into your ENGLISH JOURNAL.

NOTE: Please have your independent reading books selected by the end of the week, and we will resume quiet reading each day.

*Mark Twain's "Advice to Youth"  -- for homework you annotated this essay, noting what Twain is mainly satirizing and his use of sarcasm or verbal irony.  When you turn in your annotated copy of this text, I should see notes beside each paragraph.
